Rules for using your Chinese driving license in Germany
Short-term use (up to 6 months)
If you’re visiting Germany on a tourist or short-term visa, you can legally drive using your Chinese license together with an officially certified translation for up to 6 months. Many car rental companies (e.g. Sixt, Europcar) also require a translation before handing over the keys.
⚠️ Important: An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not a valid substitute for an officially certified translation in Germany. Only translations by a sworn translator are officially recognized.
Long-term residence (more than 6 months)
If you stay in Germany for more than 6 months, you must convert your Chinese license into a German one (Umschreibung). The conversion requires:

- ✅ Passing a practical driving test (Praktische Prüfung)
